Glassing the Inside

This photo shows "wet" glass covering the entire interior of the boat, with dry glass hanging over the edges. I did not use mat on the inside surface because I wanted to see if it added anything. It seems that all it adds is weight and (mostly unreinforced) resin, although the inside is definitely less puncture-resistant than the outside. Production boatbuilders use mat between layers of woven roving as a form of cheap core material, but it seems unnecessary for this type of construction. When I do it again I'll just use a slightly heavier glass and eliminate the mat altogether. I think 9-12 oz. glass on the outside skin and 9-oz glass on the inside would be as strong, and lighter, than glass plus mat.

Once the interior starts to gel the extra glass can be trimmed around the sheer.
